The last email for 2009

The end of 2009, it seems like yesterday and at the same time a lifetime ago that a very pregant wife and I had and incredibly special New Years and saw in 2009 in London, we were oblivious of the fact that it would be our last New Years but as with every moment we always lived as if it were our last, live life as if there is no tomorrow.

So to 2010, tomorrow is the start of another year but I will still carry a fair amount of what has happended in 2009 with me, as time goes by I will procees all that has been but what doesn't change is I miss my soul mate, my wife, Eva's mother my lover, my friend and my companion, 2009 saw me loose all that mattered to me and putting back the pieces in something that resembles an order has been and will be my challenge.

Have a Very Happy New Year and get all you can out of every moment in 2010.

Look forward to seeing you all in a very very New Year and may it be a lot less eventful than 2009.

Love at first sight

The ferry a new and always fun experience for Eva, going from Paihia to Russel for an outing.

Just as well she loves the ocean and the sounds, there would have been trouble otherwise, just like me as I type this she is falling asleep to the sway of the boat and vibration of the engine, what more could a girl want?

A special mention to that proud mother of now two, Tizzie, I know how much this area means to you so know you are in our thoughts.

Growing and developing

Weigh in day today, 7.14kgs, massive compared to the 1.3kgs of nine months ago, wow nine months, what a ride not the kind that ends up with a podium spot, not one that is smooth and easy but a trying and hard one without reward and with great loss.

As we approach Christmas and New Year it is proving the hardest time of all, last Christmas we celebrated together, just Karen and I and a very little yet to join us Eva, we were oblivious of what lay ahead and new nothing of the cancer that grew faster than Eva. Between Christmas and New Year we were the proudest of God parents at Archie's christening and then spent New Years in London, it is so fresh it was as if it is yesterday.

So forgive me if I don't send cards of presents and seem my normal jovial self for I have other thoughts and feelings that need all my attention, it may appear selfish but more than necessary.

So if you don't get a personal email or gift from Eva and I please know you matter, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and let's all look forward to a smooth, happy and HEALTHY 2010.

The sunny north

There could be worse places to swim

Another stunning day and a venture out to friends for Eva's swimming lesson, not a bad place for it I reckon, if you know New Zealand the view in the background is Cape Brett, Eva was as always loving the moment and as she gets older and spends more and more time awake we are able to start doing so much more and dad rides a lot less!

Christening the pool

"I wasn't too sure to begin with, something to do with dad making the pool too cold but I soon got use to it"

As you can see Eva is thriving, sorry I haven't been in touch for a while, having a bit of time to just chill and worry about little else other than Eva and I, I will over the next week reply to all your messages and appreciate each and every one.

Its times like today when Eva does and experiences new things that Karen is missed even more than normal, I am not bitter, angry or even feeling ripped off just missing all that she brought to all our lives and does no more.  I often wish for solitude and enjoy the time out just existing with Eva, I have heard of others in my situation that end up being recluses for extended periods and relate to why, hey the future may see more than a bit of that for me while at the same time ensuring Eva's social needs and wants are met.

As you can see from the photos the summer is well and truly in NZ, well north of Whangarei anyway, we have had warm and sunny weather and I look forward to getting a chance to venture out on the sparkling blue and enjoy all the Bay of Islands has to offer.

Venturing off shore

A whole week away from Eva, I am sure she and the grandparents will be fine it is me that will struggle, still a chance to see friends in Sydney is much needed and it sounds like the heat wave has subsided.

I am hanging just to be normal and spend time with friends, it is a big part of putting all the pieces back together and ensuring me is me again.

Eva should have the grandparents fully straightened out by the time I get back, a skype call or four will be much needed.

To the winner goes the spoils

Ah finally a trophy and a true blue kiwi one at that, a win today, trophy, money and northland road champ to boot, when it hurts I think of all that has happened and it hurts no more . . . Karen never saw me ride my bike but I always feel she is with me and her energy is a big part of why it all seems so easy at the moment, I miss her more than ever.

Not wanting to tempt fate

Eva is as always towing the line and with the help of our bible (Save Our Sleep) successfully dropped the dream feed without a hitch, so now a true 7pm to 7am without a hitch. I waited until she had done a few nights before letting you all know, didn't want to tempt fate.

She continues to become more Eva Whyman and less baby each and every minute and shows determination, feistiness, will and tenacity that makes me so proud but also scares me shitless :-).

A Climber

Wow, a sprinter that can go up hills, long story short my three weeks of cram training paid off combined with a very easy taper week all came to fruitiion, 1st in age group, 3rd overall in a time of 5:40:23, the elite guys were a seperate race and if you add them in as well I got 11th fastest time, not so bad.

I had a great day, felt amazing and without a doubt had a couple of extra people with me when it was needed, I started in the second bunch as the first was full up to its 100 quota, after 70kms I was getting a bit bored so decided if in doubt have a go and departed my bunch in search of the front one, after a bit too much effort I manged to find them and by Thames was happily placed in the front bunch and having started three minutes behind them now well and truly in good standing, all I had to do now was get over the next three big bergs and amazingly I did, even beat the poor buggers home in the small bunch sprint.

I though it was enough for the win but unfortunately a couple of guys had snuck away from the front bunch early on so nevermind, can't complain, it was a great day, sun with incredible views, bring on the next challenge.

A huge thanks to Brian and Anne for putting up with me, Boult's morning coffee brew made all the difference.

Relaxing with friends

My view whilst having a glass of vino and hanging out with great friends, missing Eva like crazy but enjoying the time away.

The two views

The top of one of the bergs in tomorrow ride, nice views but I have just slightly underestimated how hilly 200kms can be, never mind, will have to strap on my climbing legs!

Time out

Wow, my first time away from Eva and missing her like crazy, it is made easier that mum and dad are so good with her and 100% reliable!

It is a stunning day in Auckland and breakfast views are pretty good, on a great day it is a hard place to beat but I have to admit after the UK I don't miss the NZ drivers!

Time to set off for Coromandel and the joy of a 200km bike ride tomorrow, great weather forecast for the weekend and enjoying catching up with friends, sunshine and a little time out.

Ready to hit the town!

Pictures

Frank,

Cruising up a berg on the CX-1, which for me a very much non climber says it all, the bike is superb, SRAM Red I rate and the Fast Forward wheels after three weeks of hardy NZ roads are still as true as day one and stiff and fast, happy so as requested photos attached.  And for all you on the blog, get a Colnago and feel the difference!!
